Producer Spotlight: A Chat with Andrew Graham

This month, we’re featuring Andrew Graham, a 5th generation farmer running a mixed livestock operation with his father David and brothers Tim and Charlie.

Building on Family Foundations

Andrew and his family run a diverse operation focusing on Merino sheep (split between Merino and terminal joining) alongside their Angus herd. For the Grahams, it’s all about long-term sustainability – they’re not just farming for today, but for the generations to come.

Why Gundagai Lamb?

“There’s obviously a premium for lambs that hit the grid, and the location works for us,” Andrew explains. But it wasn’t just about the premium – the technology and detailed feedback on their Merino lambs caught their attention.

Partnership That Pays Off

What stands out for Andrew is how the relationship works both ways: “The openness and transparency with the Gundagai Lamb team is great. They want to work with us to achieve results – I guess for Gundagai Lamb to be successful, they need their producers to be successful.”

Data-Driven Decisions

Here’s a practical example of how feedback makes a difference: Despite regular worm testing showing no liver fluke, the Gundagai Lamb feedback picked up an increase in immature fluke rejections from 6% to 12%, along with dropping IMF scores. Tackling this issue didn’t just improve their IMF – it significantly boosted their lambs’ daily weight gain.

Industry Evolution

Andrew’s noticed some big shifts in recent years: “There’s been a stronger focus on consumer needs and the weight processors are looking for.” While this creates challenges at the farm level, he sees it driving opportunities and pushing producers to embrace more science and data in their programs.
